Templates and daily notes
Some notes start the same way every time: a meeting, a quotation, a trip, today’s page. A template is an ordinary note you’ve marked as a starting point, and a daily note is the page for one calendar day.
Make a template
Write the note you want to reuse, then choose Note › Save as Template. It moves into the Templates row in the sidebar and stays out of All Notes, tags, search, Quick Open and link completion, so your reusable scaffolding never clutters a search.
Note › Convert Template to Note turns it back into an ordinary note.
New to this? File › Add Starter Templates adds four editable examples — a meeting, a saved quotation, a trip and an estimate — two of which include calculation blocks. They’re added only when you ask, and never duplicated.
Placeholders
A template can leave blanks for Varlig to fill in:
| Placeholder | Becomes |
|---|---|
{{date}} |
The note’s day |
{{time}} |
The time the note is created |
{{datetime}} |
Both |
{{title}} |
The new note’s title |
{{cursor}} |
Where the caret starts |
{{input:Label}} |
What you type when asked for “Label” |
Use the same label twice and you’re asked once; leave an answer empty to omit it. Anything Varlig doesn’t recognise stays as written.
Create a note from a template
Choose File › New from Template…, or Option-click the new-note button above the note list. Pick a template, fill in whatever it asks for, and Varlig copies its text, tags, attachments and calculation settings into a new note.
Completed tasks start unticked in every copy, so a checklist template is ready to use again.
Daily notes
File › Today’s Note (⌃⌘T) opens today’s page, creating it the first time and reopening it after that. View › Previous Day (⌃⌘[) and View › Next Day (⌃⌘]) move between daily notes that already exist.
Journal in the sidebar (⌥⌘7) shows a month at a time, with a dot on every day that has a note and a list of the focused week. Click a day to open its note or create it. On iPhone and iPad, the Journal leads with the same calendar; see Journal, reminders and recordings.
A daily note’s day is a calendar date stored with the note, not a timestamp, so changing time zone never moves an existing daily note to another day. Each day holds one daily note.
Weekly notes
File › This Week’s Note (⌃⇧⌘T) opens the note for the current week, creating it the first time.
Weeks run Monday to Sunday and are numbered the ISO 8601 way, so a new weekly note starts with a
heading such as # Week 39, 2026 and the week’s dates underneath. View › Previous Week (⌃⌥⌘[)
and View › Next Week (⌃⌥⌘]) move between weekly notes that already exist.
In Journal, the focused week’s list starts with a row for the week itself: its note’s title, or No weekly note until you click it. A weekly note keeps its week the way a daily note keeps its day, so changing time zone never moves it, and each week holds one.
Start the day from a template
Settings › Journal & Review › Daily and weekly notes chooses what a new daily note and a new
weekly note start from: a date or week heading, or any of your templates. Placeholders such as
{{date}} then use that note’s own day — a weekly note’s Monday — so yesterday’s page says
yesterday’s date even if you write it tomorrow.
