Themes and Settings on iPhone and iPad
Settings on iPhone and iPad holds the Mac’s options that make sense on a touch screen. Changes save as you make them. The selected theme, text size and calculation defaults belong to this device; saved transformations, protected-tag policies and custom theme definitions follow iCloud.
Open Settings with the gear at the top of the library, or Settings in a note list’s … menu. It starts with a card showing Varlig’s icon and what sync is doing; tap it for Sync. The pages follow in groups:
| Group | Pages |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Themes, Typography |
| Writing | Editor, Journal & Review, Calculations |
| Your Notes | Sync, Privacy |
| Plan, Check Library, About Varlig |
Choose the app’s language in Settings › Language. System follows the device’s language preferences; a specific language takes effect the next time Varlig opens. This does not change the calculation number format.
Themes
Themes is a gallery. Each theme shows as a miniature of Varlig in its colours — the library with its tiles, the note list and a page — and the one you’re using has a ring and a check.
- System follows your device: the Light theme in Light Mode and Night in Dark Mode. It’s the default.
- Light, Night, Paper, Forest and Rose are Varlig’s own themes, and dozens more palettes follow.
A theme colours the library, notes, bars, Settings, sheets, widgets and share sheet. Choosing a theme other than System keeps its appearance regardless of the device’s Light or Dark Mode. Custom themes made on your Mac arrive through iCloud under From Your Mac. Create, edit or delete them on the Mac; each device chooses its own active theme.
Typography
| Setting | What it changes | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Text, Headings, Code | The fonts for your notes, their headings, and code, calculations and the scratchpad: the system’s designs, such as New York, and families every device has, such as Avenir Next, Charter and Georgia. | The system font, with headings the same as the text |
| Font Size | The size of your text, from 12 to 32 pt. It grows and shrinks with the text size you choose for your device. | 17 pt |
| Line Spacing | The space between lines, from 0 to 16 pt. | 2 pt |
| Line Width | The widest a line of text gets, on an iPad or a phone turned sideways, from 440 to 1000 pt. | 650 pt |
A sample note at the top shows your choices as you make them. Restore Typography Defaults puts them all back.
Editor
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Check spelling while typing | Underlines possible mistakes without replacing your words. | Off |
| Move completed tasks to the bottom | Moves a task below the unfinished ones when you tick it. | Off |
| Close code blocks automatically | Typing three backticks adds the closing fence. | On |
| Insert matching brackets and quotes | Adds the closing ), ], }, " or ` after the cursor. Typing it again steps over it, and Delete removes an empty pair. |
Off |
| Calculator keys in calculation blocks | Shows calculator keys in place of the formatting keys in a calc block. | On |
| Numbers keyboard in calculation blocks | Opens the keyboard on its numbers in a calc block. | Off |
Text Transformations lists your saved transformations; see Transformations.
Markdown is typed as it’s written: Varlig never swaps straight quotes and dashes for typographic ones, so a note reads the same on your Mac.
Journal & Review
Daily and Weekly Notes chooses what a new daily and weekly note start from: New daily notes use and New weekly notes use a date or week heading, or one of your templates. Review sets Notes per day, and the tags never to review, separated by commas. See Journal, reminders and recordings and Review and On This Day.
Calculations
The Mac’s calculation settings, in the same groups: Numbers, with the number format and Answers; Answer Formatting; Currency; Calculation Summary; Variables; Everyday Calculations, with workday hours, the holiday calendar, sales tax and income tax; Workday Holidays; and Shared Definitions. Settings › Calculations explains each one.
Changes apply as you make them, and are saved once they’re valid; a field that isn’t says why. Restore Defaults resets these calculation settings, and leaves the exchange-rate and live-data switches as they are.
Two more groups follow:
- Exchange Rates: Refresh currency and crypto rates hourly, Last Updated, where the rates come from, Sources, which lists every feed and every address Varlig asks, and Refresh Now. A note with pinned rates keeps them.
- Live Data: the switches for looking up places and the weather. The weather switch appears when this copy of Varlig can reach Apple WeatherKit, with the Apple Weather mark and its Other data sources link under it; otherwise a sentence says it can’t. See Weather and places.
Sync
The whole iCloud status: what sync is doing, when it last finished, how many notes are waiting to upload, and Sync Now (or Try Again). What Syncs lists what travels to your other devices and what stays on this one. See Getting started.
Privacy
Locking protected notes, Face ID, app lock and Hide Notes in App Switcher, then Offer Recent Notes When Sharing, which is on here to begin with (on the Mac it starts off), Show Notes in Spotlight, which starts off, and What’s Protected, which explains exactly what encryption covers. See Protected notes and app lock and Spotlight.
Plan
Plan is where you buy Varlig, and it says what this iPhone or iPad can do now: Choose a plan to start writing, Your plan is active with when it renews, or Writing is paused. The word beside Plan in Settings says the same in short: Active, Paused, or Unlocked while Varlig hasn’t yet been able to check.
It lists Monthly, Yearly and Pay once with the App Store’s prices in your own currency, each with Subscribe or Buy Once, and under them “There is no free trial”, how subscriptions renew, and the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Restore Purchases brings back a plan bought with the same Apple Account on any iPhone, iPad or Mac, and Manage Subscription changes or cancels a monthly or yearly plan without leaving Varlig. Pull down to check your plan again. One plan covers your iPhone, iPad and Mac when they use the same Apple Account.
Without a plan you can still read, search, copy, share and export your notes and browse their version history, and what your other devices write still syncs in. Writing is paused: a banner at the top of the note list has Choose a Plan and Don’t Show Again, and anything that would write, such as a new note, an edit or a tick in a task box, says why at the bottom of the screen, with Choose a Plan. Buying or restoring lets you write again at once. The Mac’s page is described in Plan.
Check Library
Check Library looks through the library’s attachments for files that are missing or empty, links that lost their record, and files nothing uses. Tap a note in the results to open it.
Repair… asks first, then saves a complete safety copy of the library and fixes only what can be undone: it gives a link whose file is here its record back, puts back a missing file from an earlier safety copy, and moves unused files into a folder of their own. Nothing is deleted and no note’s text changes. Share Safety Copy… and Share Set-Aside Files… hand them to the share sheet as ZIP files; to restore a safety copy, open it on your Mac with File › Restore Backup…. See Check the library.
About Varlig
The version you’re running, and how many notes are on this device.
Under Demo Notes, Add Demo Notes brings back the demo notes a new library starts with, out of the Trash or made again, and Remove Demo Notes asks first, then moves them to the Trash. Your own notes aren’t touched.
Crash and Hang Reports says how many reports from iOS Varlig is keeping. Send Report… opens a page that shows what the report holds, with Email Support… and Share Report… to send it, and Delete Reports…. Nothing is sent by itself. See Crash and hang reports.
