What’s new in Varlig 0.0.1

Varlig 0.0.1 is the first release of Varlig on iPhone, iPad and Mac: one notebook of Markdown notes that do the maths, on every device, kept in step through your own iCloud. Here’s what’s in it, with a link to the page that covers each part.

One library on every device

  • iCloud sync keeps your notes, attachments, pins, Archive and Trash the same on your Mac, iPhone and iPad, with no account to create and no server of ours in between. Protected notes travel encrypted, and two devices editing one note never lose a word. See iCloud sync and shared notes.
  • Share a note with people through iCloud, live, choosing whether they can edit or only read. See Share a note with people.
  • The same answers everywhere. The calculator runs on each device, offline, and a note’s own settings and pinned exchange rates travel with it.
  • Handoff both ways: the note open on your Mac waits on your iPhone and iPad, and the other way round, ready to carry on at about the same place. See Handoff.
  • Siri knows your notes by name, as in “Open Groceries in Varlig” or “Read Groceries in Varlig”, and Find Notes finds them by tag and text in Shortcuts. See Shortcuts and Siri and Siri and the Shortcuts app.
  • Crash and hang reports stay on your device until you choose to send one with Send Report…, after seeing everything it holds. See Send a crash or hang report.

On iPhone and iPad

  • The library’s home, with tiles for Notes, Today, Pinned, Todo, Journal and Reminders, tinted tags, and lists grouped by date or shown as a gallery. See The library, lists and tags.
  • A reader and an editor made for touch: a formatting bar, suggestions for tags and links, find and replace, folding, tables as a grid, comments, footnotes and highlights in five colours. See Reading and editing and Comments, footnotes, highlights and tables.
  • Calculator keys above the keyboard in a calc block, names as you type, Function Help, and the answer menu with How Was This Read?, examples and graphs. See Calculations on iPhone and iPad.
  • Capture anything: New Note, Scan Document, photos, sketches with Apple Pencil, files, and the share sheet, with the words in pictures and PDFs searchable everywhere. See New notes, scans, photos and sharing.
  • The Journal with a month calendar, daily and weekly notes, reminders with alerts, and audio recordings with markers and a Live Activity on the Lock Screen. See Journal, reminders and recordings.
  • Note Info, Back and Forward and the link graph. See Note Info, Back and the link graph.
  • Protected notes with Face ID, app lock, and Spotlight when you want it. See Protected notes and app lock.
  • Widgets on the Home Screen, the Lock Screen and in StandBy for pinned notes, a live answer, today’s note and Quick Capture; controls for Control Center and the Lock Screen; Quick Capture from the Action button; and Shortcuts and Siri. See Widgets, controls, Shortcuts and Siri.
  • Themes that colour every screen, and Settings laid out like the Settings app. See Themes and Settings on iPhone and iPad.

A few things stay on the Mac, such as library backups, Word and rich-text file import and export, and publishing. HTML, TextBundle, other apps’ exports and highlight imports, plus HTML, EPUB and JPEG export, are also available on iPhone and iPad. What stays on the Mac lists the differences.

On the Mac

Calculations

  • Weather, sunrise and sunset, and distances between places, looked up for a line. A weather answer shows the Apple Weather mark and a link to its other data sources. See Weather.
  • No error while you type a name. 5 + pri, on its way to price, waits until you pause before it says the name isn’t defined. See A line that shows an error.
  • Pinned exchange rates, so a budget agreed at today’s rates stays at them, with a Rates pinned badge. See Pin the rates for a note.
  • A summary that adds only the main unit, and labels whose numbers are never added in. See What’s changed.

What you need

  • A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
  • An iPhone with iOS 17 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 17 or later. The controls need iOS 18.
  • For sync, the same Apple Account signed in to iCloud on every device.

If you’ve used an earlier build of Varlig on the Mac, What’s changed lists the commands and shortcuts that are new or work differently.
