Flat share

Rent that’s fair to the box room.

Split the rent by floor area and the bills three ways, and share the note with your flatmates through iCloud. When the rent changes, everyone sees their new share. Your own budget sits in the same notebook.

QUESTIONS

Good questions.

What can the calculator work out?

Far more than a calculator app. Percentages and discounts, units and conversions, currencies and crypto with rates that refresh on their own, dates, times and time zones, plus functions, lists and statistics. Name a value once, like “rent = £1,450”, and use it further down the note. It reads everyday phrases too, such as “20% off £80” or “days until Christmas”. The Varlig Guide covers everything it understands.

Do I need to know Markdown?

Not at all. Type as you would anywhere, and use the Format menu or a shortcut when you want structure: ⌘B for bold, ⌘T for a checklist, ⌘Y for a calc block. Varlig tucks the symbols away as you write, so notes look clean, and shows them again when your cursor is on them. If you already know Markdown, it all just works, from headings and tables to code, links and footnotes.

Why not just use a spreadsheet?

Spreadsheets are made for grids of data, but most plans are words with a few numbers in them. In Varlig you write the plan in sentences and lists, and do the sums right where they belong, using names like “hotel” and “flights” instead of cell references. There’s nothing to set up and no formulas to drag, and the note still reads like a note.

Are my notes private?

Yes. Your notes live on your devices, and in your own iCloud if you turn on sync. There’s no account to create, and nothing you write is sent to a server of ours unless you turn on faster live editing, which encrypts it end to end. Give a sensitive note its own password and Varlig encrypts it with AES, including its attachments, and you can open it again with Touch ID or Face ID. You can also lock the whole app, and keep a full copy of your library with File › Back Up Library.

Can I bring my notes in, and take them with me?

Both. Import from Bear or Soulver in one step, or bring in Markdown, text and HTML files, Word files on Mac, and Evernote, Drafts or Day One exports; Switch to Varlig shows how, app by app. Export any note or tag as Markdown, plain text or PDF for free, with calculation answers in the PDF, and as HTML or EPUB with Varlig Pro, or Word on Mac. Your writing is never locked in.

Is there an iPhone app, or sync between devices?

Yes. Varlig for iPhone and iPad reads, edits and calculates the same notes, with calculator keys above the keyboard, a document scanner and widgets. Turn on Sync notes with iCloud in Settings › Sync & Backup on your Mac, and your library stays in step through your own iCloud, with no account to create. Getting started on iPhone and iPad shows how.

How do I get started?

Varlig is in private beta on Mac, iPhone and iPad: ask to join, and we’ll reply with how to install it. Unlimited notes, iCloud sync, shared notes and every calculation are free; Varlig Pro adds power tools. It needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later on a Mac with Apple silicon, and iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad. The first time you open it, ten short demo notes show you what it can do, with a list of things to try that ticks itself off as you go.

Still curious? The Varlig Guide explains every feature, with examples you can copy.
