Reminders
A note often holds something that needs doing later: a task, a passage to come back to, a note to reread before a meeting. Varlig can remind you, and the reminder stays attached to the thing it is about.
Set a reminder
- For the whole note: choose Add Reminder… from the
…menu in the note’s toolbar. - For one task: right-click a task line and choose Add Reminder for Task….
- For a passage: select some text, right-click and choose Add Reminder for Selection….
The sheet shows what the reminder is about, three quick picks — Later Today, Tomorrow Morning and Next Week — a date picker, and a Repeat setting of Never, Every Day, Every Weekday, Every Week or Every Month. A new reminder starts at tomorrow morning at 09:00.
Varlig asks macOS for permission to show notifications when you save your first reminder.
Also add to Apple Reminders
Tick Also add to Apple Reminders in the sheet, and saving hands a copy to the Reminders app, in its default list. Reminders gets the title, the time, the repeat and a link that opens the note — never the note’s text or the passage the reminder points at. A private note’s title stays hidden: Reminders sees Varlig reminder instead. Reminders then alerts at that time too.
macOS asks for access to Reminders the first time, after the sheet has closed. If you don’t allow it, or adding fails, Varlig says so, and the reminder is still set in Varlig.
Varlig only ever adds. From then on the copy belongs to Reminders: changing, completing or deleting the reminder in Varlig doesn’t change it, and editing the reminder shows Also in Apple Reminders since the day you added it. The next new reminder starts with the choice you made last.
The Reminders list
Reminders in the sidebar lists everything you’ve set, grouped into Overdue, Upcoming, Paused — note in Trash and Completed. Each row shows when it’s due, any repeat, and — for a reminder set in another time zone — the time in that zone.
When the list is empty it says so, and offers Add Reminder… for the note you have open, so you don’t have to go and find the menu.
Open goes to the note, and to the task or passage the reminder points at. The row’s menu holds Edit…, Snooze 1 Hour, Snooze Until Tomorrow, Complete and Delete. A repeating reminder offers Complete This Occurrence, which moves it on to the next one.
Tasks complete their reminders
Tick the task a reminder points at and the reminder completes itself — no need to visit the list. Unticking it does not bring the reminder back; set a new time if you want one.
If the task or passage is no longer there when you open the reminder, the note opens at the top and Varlig says the anchor is gone rather than guessing a position.
Time zones and daylight saving
A reminder keeps the time you set and the zone you set it in. Travelling doesn’t move it, and if you edit it on a Mac in another zone, the time you see stays and that Mac’s zone takes over.
A time that a daylight-saving change removes moves forward to a real one; a repeated hour uses the first of the two.
Privacy
Reminders on password-protected notes, and on notes carrying a protected tag, show a neutral alert with no title or content. While Varlig itself is locked, every alert is neutral.
Reminders are stored in your Varlig library and scheduled with macOS notifications on this Mac. They’re included in backups, and they aren’t synced: your Mac, iPhone and iPad each keep and alert for their own. Also add to Apple Reminders is the way to see a reminder everywhere. See Journal, reminders and recordings for reminders on iPhone and iPad.
